Escaping the Trap of “Busy”

Recently, when people ask me how I am, my automatic response has been, “Staying busy.” And I am busy–with kids, work, writing, building a new house…life. But I feel like I’ve fallen into a trap that a lot of us fall into. I’ve been so busy “keeping up” that my busyness is starting to drag me down. With a 18-month-old and a seven-year-old, I don’t want my kids to look back and remember their mom always too busy to play with them.

This month I’m going to focus on getting my schedule under control. Here are some things I’m going to try:

1. Make a list of all my commitments and cut out some things. There are things that were priorities in the past, that aren’t anymore. There are some things I do because I’ve always done them. It’s time to re-evaluate.

2. Learn to say “no.” I’ve gotten better at this, but sometimes I slip back into my people-pleasing ways.

3. Exercise and get outside more. I workout in the gym a few times a week, but taking a walk outside has a way of slowing my brain down. Now that the weather is cooling off, I need to get back to that habit.

4. Simplify. I’m a minimalist at heart (having children makes this challenging), and we’re currently living at my mom’s house while our new home is being built. Moving my family into a couple of guest rooms has done two things. 1. Reminded me how few belongings we really need. 2. And made me appreciate how important having some “white space” in my home and in my life is. I haven’t missed many things that have been in storage the past three months. When we move into the new house, it’s time to clear some of those things out.

5. Pray / Meditate. I’m an introvert and I need that quiet time to restore my mind and my soul. Constantly having people and commitments pulling at me, drains all my energy. It’s time for me to build quiet time into my schedule.

So do you have any ideas for me? How can we escape the trap of busy?

Favorite Movie Moms

SONY DSCThanks to the retail industry, none of us were allowed to forget it was Mother’s Day earlier in the month. As a mom who got flowers for the first time ever, I’m okay with that. lol.

Since our theme this month is movies, it seemed like the perfect combination. These are some of my favorite movie moms in no particular order. Some made me laugh, some made me cry. And some were downright terrifying!

Totally Tough Mom – Linda Hamilton – Terminator 2

Totally Sweet Mom – Dianne Wiest – Edward Scissorhands

Most Fun Single Mom – Meryl Streep – Mamma Mia!

Heartwarming Mom – Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side

Psycho Mom – Faye Dunaway – Mommie Dearest

My Favorite Psycho Mom – Uma Thurman – Kill Bill

My All-Time Favorite Movie Mom – Holly Hunter – The Incredibles

These are just a few of the many mothers portrayed in the film industry. Some are good, some are evil, and some are just, well, Mom.

Do you have a favorite Movie Mom?
