Summer?! Really?

summer2For the first time in many, many years I am working a full-time job during the summer months.  I have been fortunate up until now to have been able to spend the time at home with my kiddos while enjoying the activities that go along with the heat and lack of a schedule.  Luckily, not sure if it can be considered luck or not, I am off work for the rest of this week so I can deal with storm damage issues.  And yes, the little man and I are trying to squeeze in a summer activity or two while I’m home.  Thankfully my new job has a great benefit package but with being a new employee…I will have to wait quite awhile before I can actually take time off for pleasure.  No vacation for us this year.

So what am I missing?  To be honest…nothing I can’t actually do after work or on the weekends.  I do miss being able to shop for groceries without dealing with being run over by wild weekend crowds.  And yes, I do miss being able to sleep in and wear my jammies all day.  I miss not being able to get lost in my current work-in-progress and write when inspiration strikes.  By the time I get home from work I’m scrambling to make dinner and/or do any cleaning or activities we have scheduled.  I am lucky though to have a cowboy who isn’t scared to wash a dish, or two, and help with whatever it is I’m trying to cram in before bedtime.

Long story made short?  Summer?!  The only difference for me now is that it’s hot.  Really, REALLY hot.  And we grill outside more to keep from heating up the house with the use of the stove or oven.  Oh…and swim.  *deep sigh*  Which means more work with cleaning the pool.  Is there anyone else out there sharing my misery?! I won’t try to show my jealousy (too much) if you tell me about the wonderful family vacation you have planned.  😉  Enjoy your summer!  I’m ready for fall and FOOTBALL!!

I admire you’re working, but I do love lazing in jammies all day. 🙂 I love sleeping in, but it’s too hot to do anything outside so I edit and write. 🙂 No vacation for us, just enjoying the two of our grandbabies this week. Nice post, Chelle.

Glad you’re not really missing anything Chelle. There’s no vacation for me, either. We just have too many animals to manage to go away together. But we try and have holiday days at home.

    • I loved your idea of making your “stay”cation more like an actual vacation. We could decorate and have umbrellas for fruity drinks. I think Little Man would get a kick out of it.

  3. Thank you, Calisa! And me working full-time has been an adjustment for everyone. I hated having to put Little Man in daycare and updating my work wardrobe. But our office is moving in August to another location and it’ll shave about 10 minutes off my morning commute. Enjoy those grandbabies!!

  4. I work all year long too. It’s a challenge to squeeze in writing time.

    • Julie, I’ve started noticing more authors talking about their day jobs and still pushing out those books. I greatly admire you, and others that work full-time, and have kids and still find time to scrape out intelligent words. Maybe once things settle down and we get moved, and the storm damage all repaired, my body will adjust to this schedule.

  5. Ack…Chelle, I’m working the day job too (and not loving it!) With all the kids home for the summer and me at work during the day, nighttime is when we catch movies, barbecue and take walks with the puppy – so early morning is my writing time. I definitely feel your pain. 🙂

I agree, Chelle. The only difference is that it’s hot. Everything else pretty much stays the same. Wishing you an easy path to dealing with your storm damage. Hope you can work in a little summer fun with your boys. Both large and small. 🙂

I didn’t want to admit it, becausea it’s been such a great summer…but I’m ready for football and fall, too!! We haven’t done anything, though. Just a little of this and a little of that. Went to walmart tonight. Saw school supplies out, and I am bound and determined to get that done this week. No lally-gagging for me!! I will NOT shift through piles of misplaced crap the day before school is to start…

but that’s another topic for September. LOL

    • I’ll try to plan a little adventure for little man before school starts. Which isn’t far away now…our little school begins a couple of weeks before some of the larger districts.
