Hunky-or-Average-Joe-Hero AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Barbara White Daille

Welcome, Barbara, to Through Heart-Shaped Glasses!!

And thank you for coming and sharing your new release with us. All of us at THSG and our readers are always looking for something to read!

DON’T MISS THE RAFFLECOPTER GIVEAWAY!!!

But first, we have pressing questions that must be answered. So, give it to us straight:

1. Did you always know that you wanted to be an author or did you have another dream?
From the time I was about five years old, I wanted to be a writer. At that age, I didn’t know what an author was. It took me a while to catch on that real people actually wrote the books I loved. 🙂

2. What were you doing the last time you really had a good laugh?
Watching a rerun of an I Love Lucy episode.

3. How long did you write until you were finally published?
OMGosh. Decades! (See #1 above.) Seriously. With short stories, the wait wasn’t as long. I think it was nearly a year to the day that I first submitted a short story that one sold—for $75. And a month to the day after that, I sold the second short story – for $1,000! Of course, there was that lo-o-o-o-ng apprenticeship to get there. But I thought my writing career was made. 😉
After selling more than a dozen short stories, I turned to trying to sell a book. That took twenty years or more to get to the magic place: the right book on the right editor’s desk at the right time.

4. What song always makes you happy when you hear it?
Appropriate for the upcoming season and my new release: White Christmas.

5. When you sit down to write, is there a ritual you have to do before you start?
Yes. Sadly, it’s called Too Much E-Mail. But seriously, taking care of the business end of writing frees my brain to focus on the fun stuff.

6. What is the wallpaper on your cell phone?
No wallpaper, just my most frequently used apps.

7. Did you learn anything from writing your book and, if so, what was it?
I learned many things. For example this one, thanks to my hero, Michael DeFranco: give a bitter, emotionally scarred hero enough motivation and you can watch him turn into a man any woman could love.

8. Do you have any advice for other writers?
As always, my number-one advice is: believe in yourself, and never give up. (And bookmark this blog post. When you get discouraged, read number 3 above.)

9. What favorite food puts you in a great mood?
Chocolate.

And of course, Just For Fun:

Leather or lace?
Lace.
Black or red?
Red.
Satin sheets or Egyptian cotton?
Cotton.
Ocean or mountains?
Mountains.
City life or country life?
Small-town. 🙂
Party life or quiet dinner for two?
The quiet dinner.
Dogs or cats?
Dogs—woman’s best friend.
Hunky heroes or average Joe?
Argh! Please, can’t I have both?? If not, then average Joe, always—because to his perfect mate, he’s the hunkiest hero ever.

Don’t miss Barbara White Daille this Holiday Season!!

Christmas is in the air early this year and so are all the BOOKS. Get this one for a steal.

Single mom Amber Barnett loves family, kids, Christmas…and unfortunately, her boss, confirmed bachelor Michael DeFranco. It’s a crush she really needs to get over. Except, when she’s temporarily forced from her apartment, her only option is to stay at Michael’s private ski lodge, where she’s the housekeeper. No problem. Her handsome boss rarely visits Snowflake Valley unexpectedly, plus he’s spending the holidays with his family. Or so she thinks…

A stormy Christmas Eve reunion leaves Michael seeking the solitude of his lodge, where he finds Amber in residence—and in trouble. Attempting to save her from her matchmaking family, he announces they’re a couple. His good deed backfires when they’re instantly included in each and every holiday event in town. So much for solitude.

Only the more time he spends with the beautiful, cheery brunette, the more he yearns to make things real between them. But he and Amber want different things, and Michael could never be the family man she’s looking for.

When You’ve Never Been…

People say write what you know about. I’m not a total believer in that, but I have to admit it does make things easier. I’m English from Kendal, a small town in the north of England (though I now live on a mountain in Spain) and most of my books are set in England, mainly in London, where I lived and worked for a number of years.

However, I love to try different things, and so the book I’m writing now is set in a small town in America. I could have set my small town anywhere, but I settled on Virginia’s eastern shore, close to the island of Chincoteague, because when I was a child, I read a book called Misty of Chincoteague and fell in love with the area and the ponies.

Four wild ponies of Assateague Island, Maryland, USA crossing the water of the bay. These animals are also known as Assateague Horse or Chincoteague Ponies. They are a breed of feral ponies that live in the wild on an island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia. It is unknown how the animals originally populated the island, although there are a few legends.

So now I need to get a feel for my small town, what’s it like, who lives there, what do people do in the evenings, at the weekends, does everyone go to church, do they welcome newcomers with open arms or does it depend on who you are…?

Maybe I need to visit. I would in fact love to visit, but it’s not going to happen any time soon. So I’m attempting, from the comfort of my own home, to steep myself in all things small town and east Virginia in particular. Here’s my list of things to do in the name of research:

  • Read books set in small towns
  • Watch movies set in small towns
  • Google my chosen area (http://www.chincoteague.com/)
  • Google small town America – some fascinating articles come up.
  • Ask questions

What do you think is the best way (short of getting on an airplane) to get a real feel for a place you are writing about?

From Fake to Forever Sale!

Hi, all! Jennifer here with a brief announcement.

My romance From Fake to Forever is now on sale for 99 CENTS until Sunday, May 7th. So grab me at ITunes, B&N, AMZ, or KOBO while you can!

Here are what a few nice people have said:

5 STARS  “Great writing, incredible characters, and a storyline that touches your heart make this one a perfect lazy afternoon read. I highly recommend it.” -Bette H., Goodreads review

5 STARS  “Jennifer Shirk has written a beautiful sweet romance which made me laugh plenty of times.” –Anniek, Goodreads review
5 STARS  “This was my first read by Jennifer Shirk and I’ve been missing out.” –Isha Coleman, Netgalley reviewer

5 STARS  “This story is filled with captivating characters, lively banter and a touching romance.”–Rosemary, Goodreads reviewer

Here’s a little bit about it:

Sandra Moyer’s preschool is struggling, so when her sister suggests allowing a super-famous actor to research his latest role there, she reluctantly agrees. Except the actor turns out to be Ben Capshaw—a playboy who’s never serious, always joking around, and who knows zero about kids or being a parent. Case in point: his involvement in the untimely death of the preschool’s class pet…

Ben is enjoying teaching more than he thought he would, but that doesn’t mean he’s looking for a permanent position. Sure, he’s ready for more serious movie roles and less goofing off, but the buttoned-up, beautiful Sandra and her young daughter are more than he bargained for. Plus, Sandra still won’t trust him—what if it’s all an act, research for the role? As the lines between make-believe and reality blur, Ben will have to decide if love is worth casting aside the role of his life for a new role…that could last a lifetime.

Hope you check it out!

Have you read it?

My Obsession with Hallmark Christmas Movies

Hi, all! Jennifer here.hallmark

Well, we are officially now into the “Christmas season”, which means decorating for the holidays, shopping, wrapping, making cookies, reading Christmas books, and of course (my personal favorite): watching Hallmark Christmas movies!

Yes, HALLMARK CHRISTMAS MOVIES. you might even say I’ve been a bit obsessed with them. 🙂

Why? They are the ultimate feel-good kind of comfort people like me like to wrap themselves into this time of year. It’s a time and place where love always wins, people are more important than money or things, kindness can never be overdone, and memories are to be made and cherished. A good part of that is why I read romance novels too. Because in a world where there is nastiness, sorrow, pain, and ugliness, these vehicles are the perfect escape and the perfect reminder that there is a lot of good in the world too.

My FAVS (so far) this year have been:

  1. The Mistletoe Promise (I liked it so much, I bought the book!)
  2. A December Bride (will buy this book too)
  3. Fir Crazy
  4. Snow Bride
  5. Debbie Macomber’s Trading Christmas
  6. Love Always, Santa
  7. The Christmas Ornament
  8. A Very Merry Mix-Up
  9. Best Christmas Party Ever
  10. Family For Christmas

It should also be mentioned that my husband is a huge fan of “A Grandpa for Christmas”. 🙂

I haven’t had time to watch them all, but rest assured that I have been taping them and will slowly make my way through all of them by the end of the month. (I may even have to re-watch a few of them in January!)

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday season in whatever way you like!

Do you love/watch Hallmark Christmas movies too? What is your favorite one?

wrrmsmallAlso, if you love Hallmark Christmas movies, don’t forget to pick up my new Christmas sweet romance  which releases tomorrow, December 5th!
