A New Book and a Fun Giveaway by Julie Jarnagin

The Vegas Proposal is available! As a big thank you to my readers, I’m giving away an awesome Las Vegas prize pack. It includes a Vegas themed insulated mug, pen, magnet, snow globe, and post card, and a $5 Amazon gift card.

Enter here. I’ll announce a winner on Valentine’s Day!

Here’s a little about the book:

A celebrity wedding would save her family’s Las Vegas chapel—as long as she doesn’t fall for the groom.

The Traditions Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas has been in Claire Grigg’s family for three generations, and she dreams of restoring the struggling chapel to its original glory. When Claire discovers the chapel’s financial problems and the strain it’s putting on her parents’ marriage, Claire commits to doing whatever it takes to save the business.

Vegas is the last stop on Ben Karr’s tour, and he’s afraid he’ll soon be added to a long list of one-hit wonders. He’s determined to prove that his talent deserves to be taken seriously and all the sacrifices his grandmother made were worth it. He’s known more for his frequent break-ups with famous women than his music. Until he can repair his public image, Ben’s label refuses to invest in another album.

Ben devises a radical plan to save his career—a fake wedding to his starlet ex-girlfriend—but the adorable chapel director and her talk of true love and commitment is making him rethink the scam. Will Claire and Ben let go of their dreams and risk it all to grab onto a shot at true love?

2017 Goals by Julie Jarnagin

The Passionate Critters have been in planning mode this week. Everyone has been sharing their goals and dreaming about the year to come. It has been fun to see the similarities and differences in how we’re planning for 2017, but we all have the same hope – to have a healthier, happier, more productive new year.

Here’s a few tips I’ve collected from seeing the goals of our group:

  1. Decide how to break it down: Some people have set monthly or quarterly goals. Especially as writers, it’s hard to plan for November and December now. So many of us have set early goals that we’ll look at again later in the year.
  2. Balance: Most of the goals have a balance of personal and professional goals. We all included writing goals (because we’re a writing group), but many of us also set family and health goals too.
  3. Realistic but big: We all have big dreams, but we also try to keep our feet on the ground. Several of us have day jobs, young kids, and other big responsibilities outside of writing.
  4. Keep it simple: My plans consisted of only a few bullet points because too many goals tend to bog me down. I want to keep the most important things top of mind.
  5.  Having friends to encourage you is key: We’re lucky to have a group of encouraging ladies to cheer us on. Share your goals in the comments, and we’ll cheer you on too.

Do you have reading goals for the year? My goal is to read 100 books in 2017. Join my in the Goodreads reading challenge. https://www.goodreads.com/challenges/5493

Collaborating with Other Authors by Julie Jarnagin

One of my favorite parts of being an author is getting to work with other writers. One way I get to work with awesome authors is through the critique group I’m in with the ladies on this blog.

Another way is getting the opportunity to take part in anthologies. This month, I’m excited to announce a new novella, Engaged by Friday that you can get on its own or as part of a four novella anthology.

One reason I love working on projects like this is because of the creativity that comes when more than one author brainstorm together. It was so much fun to come up with the idea of four women on a high school reunion planning committee making a pact to use online dating to find reunion dates. From that idea, we all helped each other come up with our own twist on the original idea. There’s something about writing within the confines of a collection that helps me come up with fun, unique ideas.

Not to mention, that I love these authors as people. So I hope readers have as much fun reading these stories as we had creating them!

Julie’s Recommendations

Hi, readers! It’s Julie, waving from Oklahoma. Whether it’s a book, a product, or a recipe, I appreciate a great recommendation. Here are some things I’ve been loving lately.

 * Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick – This lipstick actually stays on all day! It’s the best. It’s affordable, and you can pick it up when you buy groceries. No need to make an extra trip to the department store makeup counter. I wear the color Stellar Sunrise most days, but when I want to go bold, I use Brilliant Bordeaux.

nbc-this-is-us-aboutimage-1920x1080-ko* This is Us – If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I’m obsessed with this show! The writing is wonderful. Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and the rest of the cast are amazing. Watch it. You might shed a few tears, but you won’t regret it.

lac-product-slider-12oz-cans-1130x496* LaCroix – If you crave soda but know how bad it is for you, this can help you kick the habit. I like the lime flavor, but I’ve heard the coconut is good if you like some sweetness. It doesn’t have any sugar or sweeteners. It’s so much better for you than real or diet soda.

* Audiobooks – I’ve been listening to a ton of audiobooks using the Overdrive app. I can check them out through my library and listen to them on my phone. I listen in the car and while I work out. I still read too, but I love listening to some of the books that everyone was talking about that I never read. I’m currently listening to The Help, and I recently listened to Room.

There you have it! The list of things I’ve been enjoying lately. It’s the little things in life, right? 🙂 What recommendations do you have for me?

Best Romantic Movie Moments

I’m a sucker for romance. I love writing romance, and I love watching romantic movies. Here are a few of my favorite moments.

When Harry Met Sally: When they finally realize they’re meant to be together. Love this movie.

Say Anything: Who could forget Lloyd Dobler holding up the boombox?

The Notebook: Young love. Sigh.

Sixteen Candles: When Jake Ryan shows up at her sister’s wedding.

Pride & Prejudice: “You have bewitched me body and soul and I love…I love… I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.”

What’s your favorite romantic movie moment?

When you need a break from the news by Julie Jarnagin

DSCN7900It’s an election year. Sigh. I love our country, but election years are exhausting…especially one as crazy as this one. While I passionately believe in being an informed citizen, the constant barrage of election coverage, party conflict, and frightening news stories can make anyone feel overwhelmed.

So let’s take a stand by taking care of ourselves. How?

  1. Realize it’s okay to turn it all off. Really. You don’t have to watch the nightly news or follow CNN.com all the time. If something big happens, trust me, you’ll hear about it.
  2. Treat everyone with kindness and respect…and ignore the crazy ones. Even if that guy you knew in high school is saying something completely ridiculous about one of the candidates on Facebook, resist commenting and falling into a big debate. Unless you really love debating politics, it will leave you drained. I’m all for standing up for what you believe in, but choose your battles carefully.
  3. Speaking of Facebook – Unfollow is your friend. If you cringe every time you read a certain person’s post, unfollow them. They’ll never know. You’ll still be on their friend list but their craziness won’t show up in your newsfeed.  You’re welcome.
  4. Read a good book. This is one of the things I love about being a writer. Life is hard. Being able to take a break and dive into another world helps us deal with tough realities, and stories can provide us with fresh perspectives.

So just know, no matter what your political beliefs, election season will be over soon, and no matter the outcome, there will always be good books out there to get us through.
