When Christmas is the New Fall Goal

Hi, all.  Jennifer here!

I can’t believe it’s fall already. But maybe I’m so surprised the year has been flying because I’ve been so busy with writing projects! Truth be told…I’m getting a little burned out.

Well. I’m trying to not let that happen. So I’ve created a new fall goal. 🙂

See, last December was terrible. Not TERRIBLE terrible, mind you. Just that I really didn’t get to enjoy Christmas like I normally do. I didn’t bake cookies and I watched maybe one Hallmark Christmas movie. (Yeah, I know. Really bad.)

So this year, my new fall goal is make sure I have ALL my writing projects completely done before December 1st. Then I’m going to take the entire month off and just ENJOY the holidays.

Sounds heavenly, yes?

Here are my plans:

  • I will make my normal 8 different kinds of Christmas cookies
  • I will make a gingerbread house (from scratch!)
  • I will host a girls Christmas get-together/cookie swap
  • I will watch EVERY NEW HALLMARK CHRISTMAS movie made
  • I will read Christmas books
  • I will spend most of my days in yoga pants and try not to eat all the cookies I make
  • Oh, and I will research on Pinterest and make really creative food gifts to give away

That there is motivation! (For me)

I can’t wait!

Have you thought about Christmas yet? Have you made any fall goals for yourself?

Arden Pearson loves planning weddings. Other people’s weddings, that is. After her own engagement ended in disaster, she prefers to live vicariously through her work. But when she needs to persuade a big client that she’s capable of planning the celebrity wedding of the year, she’s willing to go as far as pretending to be engaged herself to her best friend’s older brother.

Soon their ruse has everyone in town believing they make the perfect couple—including Arden. She’s always been nothing more than a kid sister to Wade, and it might take a village to convince him otherwise…

“I don’t understand what difference it makes if you’re married or engaged or whatever on how you do your job,” he said.

Her shoulders slumped. “Normally, it wouldn’t make a difference, until I received that bad press a few months ago.”

“The Bahamas Bolter?”

Yes,” she grumbled. “Anyway, it’s a long story, but these particular clients were hesitant to sign until I kind of sort of blurted that I was engaged.”

Wade snorted. “Seriously? It’s not like my clients think I need to own a pet to be a good veterinarian.”

“Exactly! Thank you.” She bit her lip. “Normally, I’d dismiss clientele who thought like that. However, they are pretty big clients, Wade. Huge. Huge enough that if all goes as planned, everyone will easily forget that wedding snafu I had a few months ago. I had no choice but to tell a teensy lie. And, well, since you had wanted me to pretend to be your girlfriend earlier, I figured…”

“You figured I could be your fake fiancé.”

“Yes. Will you?”

“Uh, here’s the thing. I wanted a girlfriend,” he said, folding his arms. “I didn’t say anything about a fiancée.”

“Oh, Wade, really?” She spluttered. “What’s the difference?”

“What’s the difference? It adds a whole other element to the charade. And besides, don’t you think you’re moving a little fast in our fake relationship? I had no idea you were so pushy. Fake boyfriends don’t like to be—”

“Okay, I get it!” She huffed. “So sorry I didn’t fulfill your time requirement to be fake courted properly, but like I said, this is an actual emergency.”

He took a bite of banana bread and chewed, pretending to think it over. “I don’t know…”

Arden planted her fists on her hips with a harrumph. “What don’t you know, Wade? Whether you actually missed out on the fake wooing or how unreasonable you’re acting right now?”

“Now, now. A short temper is not something particularly attractive in a fake girlfriend slash fiancée.”

“Well, maybe when a person’s career is in jeopardy and she asks a friend for help and gets turned down flat, she wouldn’t feel the urge to punch the fake boyfriend slash fiancé in the throat.”

He wanted to grin but didn’t dare. It was rare to have the upper hand with Arden—and he found he was quite enjoying this sudden little nuance, along with her begging him for help.

Local Author High Tea #oceancitynj #authors

Happy Friday!

Jennifer here!

You may not be aware but I’m highly involved with my public library in town. In fact, I’m on the Library Board of Trustees and love to advocate reading and authors all the time.

Our library has a great relationship with our Friends & Volunteers of the Library as well. Since we happen to have a big reading community, the Friends always put on two big author events each year. In May, they host a Local Author High Tea and in October, they host a NY Times bestselling author luncheon.

These tickets sell out like concert tickets!!

But I digress.

Yesterday, we had our local author tea. Jonathon King was our author.

What a great event!

I just love celebrating other authors’ works and hearing their creative process. So fun. And of course, I love telling others what a great public library we have! (The Ocean City Free Public Library)

Here I am with my library director and also with a writer from our town newspaper.

(PS. I wore a dress I bought from Boden. It has pockets!!!)

And lastly, fellow Entangled author Tina Gabrielle made the drive down to attend as well!

Looking forward to the next author event for sure!

Do you have a lot of author events in your area? Do you live in a big reading community?

4 Books to Help Improve Your Writing Craft #writing #writetip

Hi, all! Jennifer here.

I talked a little about one-word goals last month. But this month I wanted to talk about some individual goals I have for the year.

Here within my critique group every year, we all post writing and personal things we’d like to accomplish.

One of mine was to improve my writing craft.

Even though I am a published author, I still feel as if I have only scratched the surface of what I know and where I want to be as a writer. So in conjunction with me attending conferences and taking online courses, I also made it a goal to read at least FOUR craft books this year as well. In fact, I’ve already picked them out and read one of them.

Here are the four I’ve chosen to Help Improve My Writing Craft this year:

Layer Your Novel: The Innovative Method for Plotting Your Scenes by C.S. Lakin

I liked this book. It gave loads of examples from various books on how authors build upon their plots.

Writing Deep Scenes: Plotting Your Story Through Action, Emotion, and Theme by Martha Alderson (Goodreads Author), Jordan E. Rosenfeld (Goodreads Author)

I just started this book. But I chose it because I heard good things about it and was interested in going “deeper” with my writing.

Story Genius: How to Use Brain Science to Go Beyond Outlining and Write a Riveting Novel (Before You Waste Three Years Writing 327 Pages That Go Nowhere)by Lisa Cron

Picked this beauty up because of a critique partner who was reading it. I’m about halfway through and so far I’ve been nodding and agreeing with everything that was said.

Characters and Viewpoint (Elements of Fiction Writing)  by Orson Scott Card

I picked this one up because I was looking for something beyond plot. I wanted to work on my characters. I hear this author is a master on this subject so I’m looking forward to reading it.

Hopefully I’ll be able to read more than just 4, but I haven’t found any other craft books that interest me.

Maybe you have some suggestions of your own! If so, please let me know!

Until then,

HAPPY WRITING

Jennifer

New Year, New Word #oneword365

Hi, all! Jennifer here.

Happy New Year!

I don’t know about you, but I love starting the new year with a fresh slate of goals and dreams. I’m not really one for resolutions though. A few years ago, I was introduced to a new concept when creating goals for the new year. That concept was to just pick ONE WORD.

Yes, one word.

You’d be surprised how focusing on something so simple can impact your life. Start by choosing a word that speaks to you. Check out one word for word choices.

What do you feel you lack or need to work on? What is a word that describes how you want to be or live?

For me, the word I chose for 2018 is DISCIPLINE.

Why?

I hope to be more disciplined in my writing and in my eating and exercise habits. It’s a word I will think about a lot when I’m making choices this year.

How about you? Have you made a resolutions or goals for the new year?

Or will you choose a word for 2018?
